I have a 55 gallon tank and a pretty large amazon that takes up about a third of it...i have a variety of chilids, mostly parrot chilids, 2 of them are larger but there are i think 4 that have been tiny since i got them, if i take the plant out will they grow?

Any relationship is indirect at best. It could be the plant gives the smaller fish a good hiding place, especially if the larger parrots chase the others away when food goes in the tank. If you take out the plant, the small ones may not have a good of a place to hide, then they'll be even more stressed if the parrots are harrassing them, so they may even eat less.

I'd advise you to just spend some time observing the tank during feeding time to make sure the above scenario isn't what's happening. You may need to target feed the smaller fish, or separate them so the smaller ones have a better chance of getting food.

If the bottom of your plant isn't protected by a pot or large rocks, I'd suggest you do that - by the time the parrots grow up, they'll probaly damage it by digging around in the gravel and uprooting it. It sounds like it's a nice specimen that you may want to try and keep.

No the size of the plant won't affect the growth of your fish. Just like the size of your tank won't ( ie putting fish that get big in a small tank won't keep them small)
