I would like to know if it is relatively safe for me to do so, since it can harm pets, and where could i get melamine.

Please, serious answers only.

The reason it harms pets is because the reaction takes place IN THEIR BODIES and the crystals that form harm them. If you don't drink the stuff, you should be safe. Not sure where you would get small enough quantities of these to test. This is a site for melamine: http://www.melamine.com/

Cyanuric acid is a component in pool chlorine, but I don't know if you can get it separately:

I would suggest you consult a university or school chemistry department, or search the net.
