I have a snail infestation in one of my 8 gallons and was told a way to control them was to put some lettuce or cucumber on the bottom of the tank and a day or so later it should be covered in snails and you just throw the snails out,

I put some cucumber in a small cup and put it upside-down in the tank, but they keep floating to the top of the glass (its clear). How do I get it to stay on the bottom?

Also, are there any small loaches or other snail-eaters that would get along with mollies and platies?

And Ive tried salt....and it doesnt work in this tropical tank (though it worked wonders in my betta tank. There were more than I could count in there, and now there's 1....and Im hesitant to use chemicals, especially since what Ive read says that the amount to the snail-be-gone stuff you need will hurt the fish.

Any of the loaches would eat snails, but be careful of which species you get - clowns can grow to be 12-14 inches long! Loaches are social, and really should be kept in schools of at least 3, so if you decide to get fish for control, go with one of the smaller species. I like kuhlii loaches: http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/613.htm and zebras: http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/272.htm which stay a lot smaller.

Another thing you might try is to use a plastic deli or yogurt container as a snail trap. Cut an opening in the rim larger enough for the snails to get into (but too small for the fish who may also like to eat it). Put the cucumber (or lettuce or whatever you want to use for bait) inside, them put on the lid. A few pieces of gravel will make the container sink (once you've turned it upside down to release any air) but the snails can still crawl up the inside of the container to the bait. Keeping the bait inside a container also prevents snails from escaping by falling off when you lift out the bait. Just repeat as often as needed.

Buy a veggie clip...it suction cups to the side of the tank...then you could put it where ever you want to. Another way to get rid of snails is by using aquarium salt (okay in freshwater) it pretty much makes the water softer, fish are okay in it but snails cant live in it. If you have a semi-aggressive tank (prob not since its only 8 gal) you can get a clown loach which will eat them....Goldfish will eat snails too.....The last suggestions I have is a chemical called "Snail Be Gone" which is sold at most petstores...that works really well. Good luck

They make small clips that you can attach veggies to and have them stay at the bottom of your tank. If your low on cash just grab a cloth spin and a small weight and make on yourself.

just tie a weight to it or a rock or something. you could use fishing line or cotton to tie it.

As for the loaches...I love clown loaches I think they are awesome fish..I love how they sleep on their sides :)

I think the best method is to tie a rock to whatever vegetable you are using.
