Usually no need to go to an expensive dealer. Just call around to find a competent key service that will do. All they usually need is the VIN number. Should only take an hour or so at most.

If it's a regular key, $25-$50. Call your local Mercury dealership, sometimes they can make the key off the VIN (Vehicle Id#) and all you might need to do is read it to 'em over the phone. It'll probably take you longer to give 'em the VIN number.

If you know anyone with a roadside assistance program (like triple A or Verizon Wireless roadside assistance) you can get this service for free. I dont' know how long it takes. I think only an hour or two. I am certain that it is an included feature in my roadside assistance plan that is only 3.99 a month on my cell phone bill. if anyone has verizon, have them add it and you can use their service too. as long as they are with you, or as long as their cell phone is with you. After 24 hours of purchase, it can be used, also pop-a-lock services are free with it, and having someone come out to put on your spare tire, etc. it's a great service, you get 6 free calsl in a year.

Your lucky. That car's old enough so the Ford keys are cheap. A 2004 Ford would be a different story, like $120.

Stop by any FLM dealer store parts department and with your tag registration card or title and proper ID (driver's license), should take less then 30 minutes and cost about $5 or less (if the key is not the chip type).

Try a scrap yard, get an ignition lock (with key ) from a wreck and put it in, you will have to take the steering column apart, but it will be cheaper.
