If , as it seems, that a violent rape is about the worst thing , short of murder, that can happen to a woman...why, with their voting majority, do they allow only an average punishment of only 5 years?

You are expanding on what is wrong. I was trying to get at why women do not assert themselves since they have the voting numbers and the most to lose....

TheJudge: Point taken. Yes, it would imply boosting more serious crimes correspondingly up the line. And inequities would have to be addressed.

HCL123: True, it is not just a feminist issue. And, if by "neither government", you mean the two major parties, voters could always register independent and make stricter punishments the cost of winning their vote.

I've often wondered this myself. When I was a girl, I was stalked by a man who had previously been convicted of abducting and raping children. My family was horrified to learn that he had done less than 10 years, then was released back onto the street.
Perhaps part of the problem is that we fill up our jails with drug addicts.

I agree that punishments should be much longer....and often for murders too, it's astounding how low the sentences are for so many violent crimes.
With women's voting "majority" though, I don't get what you mean, when voting for Government, neither Gov't appears to be any better on giving appropriate sentencing!
Considering that we are bombarded with constant distractions of lipstick and other "must-have" items for women that will give us the "perfect life", it kind of takes our minds away from politics too. Finding the perfect Fall handbag keeps our minds and pursestrings away from politics sufficiently for our voting majority to fall from the wayside.....
I am not sure if it's a Feminist issue though, I am guessing a lot of men are keen on harsher punishments too....the thought of someone raping your mother or daughter is as painful for a man or a woman and I am sure either would be in favour of the longest sentence possible.....

I guess, the authors of an American constitution have never been raped personally... It is not possible to explain in words what rape is. I will try to do my very best and call it a murder of the soul. There is absolutely no punishment in this world that can be enough for that kind of a crime. It takes away hope, feeling of safety, trust in yourself and people around you... It takes away your joy of being alive. The fact is that very seldom people recover and are able to lead a normal life after experiencing rape. Most victims exist in fear for the rest of their natural life. What kind of a life that is? You tell me.

i think ur question is absolutely right that if a person had rapped a woman then it is accussed for very less duration for 5-6 years ......thats not right ,.....that woman is punished for whole its remaining life...and that is also be come in the net of death........
but on the other side that accussed person is punished for only 5-6 yrs and then again there also a opportuinity is given to that for live .........its not humanity.................. i think that one must be hang to death...... such that no one can try to mistake again like these mistakes.........
u always see indian courts are not so hard as in the foreigns......like us,uk......... all here the matter is of taking bribe and to left that accussed person.........

rape is the only crime other than murder that you can receive the death penalty for and i know in my area rapists are seen as guilty until proven innocent and usually get sentences as harsh as if they did commit a murder. but it may have something to do with the fact that most of the judges and magistrates in my area are women.

I think your question is unintentionally misleading because rape is right behind murder in terms of length of prison sentences in every study I've ever seen. It is consistently ahead of other violent assault crimes. I think your real concern may be over the length of sentences for all crimes, but I think that goes to a different issue. Studies also show that aside from fraud-related convictions, women receive much lighter sentences on average than men for virtrually every crime (and that's probably because the level of violence is also lower for women, generally).

Because believe it or not we live in a man's world. . . that most of the time revolves around sex and money. . . and the man sucks. . . a man can be brilliant. . . but men are ridiculously stupid.!!!
p.s. if I had my way . . . morals aside . . . the punishment would be far greater for such an offense!

It could be that it is not murder, no where near it.
What is the average for murder. There are women who get 60 days for murder. Maybe rape should be 20 days.
