well they aren't tall but when I was a little girl we always grew nasturtiums in a big bowl on the dining room table every winter. they grow quickly and do quite well with just regular household lights (as opposed to special grow lights)

Actually, no - they are annuals so they have an intenal timer that stops their life cycle just after they finish blooming and you cannot hold that off forever. Think about it - you do not see people with houses full of annuals over the winter, in spite of their prettiness, yes? Besides, they take too much sun to handle the shade of being indoors even in a bright south window. However, if you leave the blooms to fade normally and leave them outdoors in the winter where the soil will stay moist even as the plans are dead, seed will drop onto the soil and Petunias are ready-seeders that return happily if the soil is not disturbed. They will show up later than the ones show up in the stores - so it does take some patience, which is why most people replace them anyway. They are also not going to be identical - genetically speaking - to what was originally in the pot (though normally they are close). So over time, the colors of petunia in the pot will change a little - but they will return, from seed, as long as the soil remains viable in the pot and they get some winter weather exposure to set the seed's clock properly.
