Get rid of the fractions by multiplying by 2 on both sides to get
6a -16 = a + 4
Then subtract a from both sides to get
5a -16 = 4
Add 16 to both sides to get
5a = 20
Divide each side by 5 to get
a=4

5a/2 = 10
5a = 20

2(3a - 8 ) = a + 4

ok first you birng over the 2 by subtracting 2 on both sides

3a-10=a/2

then you multiply everything by 2

6a-20=a

then you birng over the 6a by subtraction

-20=-5a

Lastly you divide by -5

4=a
