This is one of those questions in which I must disagree with the assumption. I have to agree with DesertViking_00. I don't believe that it should be the govenments job to take care of. because the more they do, the greater the tax burden and eventually everyone is going to feel that they should be taken care of. So where is the money going to come from. What needs to be revisited is where is the money coming from and where is it being spent. Lets allow the tax payers to keep more of what they earn.
"Democracy works until the people find a way to vote themselves into money". Its a dangerous road when all we vote for is people that promise to take care of us. Eventually you will lose everything to feed this monster that is going to feed the world at your expense.

Well, I think the parents of these kids need help too. I totally believe in health care for children in low income homes. I also believe in services for the parents with these children. I think some parents need better parenting skills...there isn't any manual that comes with a baby and unfortunately some aren't born with the parent instinct. We can help kids all day long, but if the parents can't help them...who can?
As far as elderly people go..they don't get enough help. Some may say there is all kinds of help out there for them, but there are still many who fall through the cracks and are struggling to make it from one day to the next. There are a lot of elderly people who do not have anyone to call on for help. Some can't read or see or know how to get the help that may be available.
To answer your question, yes..I think the system is messed up. Until people start speaking up about this more, nothing will be done. A lot of the people who are against helping those in need do not know anything about the system and I hope for their sakes they never need government assistance...it is a pain in the butt for young people and old.

Ya know if we revamped the tax system and paid taxes that actually did government stuff, we wouldn't need all the social programs. Private insurance would pick up the tab and there would be a little cash left over to locally take care of the foreboding safety net requirement.

As a "baby boomer" I've been in the position of helping to care for a grandparent when I was still in school, and later a parent & adult child at the same time. I am not counting on my child to take care of me when the time comes.
I don't think the government should have to take care of anyone, but they could help with visiting nurses, etc so seniors could stay home instead of being placed in nursing homes. After working since I was 14, I think that's the least they could do.

The government has no duty to take care of anyone. None of the enumerated powers given to the three branches of the government in the U.S. Constitution mentions any requirement to take care of anyone. What has happened since March of 1933, is a driving force propelled by a misreading of the phrase "provide for the common welfare" contained in the preamble to that document.
Nearly three-fourths of the Federal budget is dedicated to expenditures for programs that are locked in concrete. And, like Doctor Pavlov's dogs, we have been conditioned to accept that state of things.

Yes, especially since its to be "for and by the people." I think Bush wants us to save up for our retirement and health care needs, period, and not depend at all on the government to help. Does this mean we can go back to the time when no one paid taxes on their earnings?

Agreed!....I need help now ensuring my mom can continue to stay in her assisted living home...and my own children will need help down the road for me..........our western society is not one that reveres taking care of 'family', unfortunately, despite what some may say [like politicians]

Of course they do. The politicians the we elect never cared about us when they were elected. They only cared about how to get into office so that they can screw us. If you ever meet an 'honest' politician, I think the world will end.

The Government always withdraws help from those that need it most, they've got their priorities quite wrong, they should reduce bureacracy and put much more funding into the mentally handicapped, old people in nursing homes, and our wounded soldiers and the war widows who are often in dire straits.
