While removing my fan to clean the mountain of crap under it, the whole assembly came out (Fan, Heatsink and CPU)
The CPU can not be reinstalled.
Because the heatsink goop has turned to cement, making the two pieces into one,
the heatsink is now in the way of the lockdown arm
Any ideas how to remove or dissolve the goop and seperate the two

If a thermal pad was used, you could try heating up the heatsink to 50°C before attempting to remove the processor.

If a highly adhesive material was inappropriately used, any attempt to separate processor could damage it.

I seriously don't recommend it. I have good cooling and air circulation....the side of my case is open for crying out loud. The problem is that one time, i didn't stick the heat sink in place and the temperature was rising to 100 degrees Celsius and over. The computer would shut itself off. I placed it in a better way and, what do you know ? The temperature now was only around 50 degrees Celsius. It may still be a little high but I have a Core 2 Quad. Those things really generate some heat :) The heat sink removes a lot of the CPU's heat through conduction. Check that it's in place and that it has some thermal paste in between. Conclusion : Removal of heat sink is highly not recommended :)

Sometimes system builder use a thermal adhesive by mistake instead of a thermal paste. Thermal adhesive is basically glue and if they did that your screwed.

If the computer is a couple of years old you might be able to get a new faster CPU for $30-$50. Just make sure your motherboard will support it. You can check here for a new CPU:

You could also try ebay..... But I would not trust a used one from there and even buying an unused one is risky on ebay...

You're just going to have to try your best to pop it off without bending the pins. Get a small flat-head screw drivers from a watch repair kit.
