I've been a widow for twenty years now and my new best friend is a woman I used to work with. We became close nineteen years ago. She has a terrific husband that doesn't share her interest for traveling and card playing so we do these things together. We play bridge once a week. We have been on six cruises and are taking another next month. We have also been on three road trips with two other girlfriends, Eastern Canada and New England, Myrtle Beach, and the coast of California to the wine country. We are all meeting up in Santa Fe, New Mexico next year. These two winter in Florida and summer in Wis. My other friend summers in Wis. and winters here in Arizona where I live. I sure miss her in the summer. She is such a loyal friend. We would do anything for each other.

Funny, but all the time I was growing up, my very best friends were guys...each and every one.
Then after I married my jealous husband made sure I didn't have ANY friends at all. I really DID recognize the lack and actively went out seeking friends again when we had been married for 13 years. I developed a really close best friend then, that unfortunately for me, got even closer with my husband. They married a year after I kicked him out.
So I was really leery about forming "best friend" associations for a long time afterwards. I found myself drifting towards friendships with men over women again. But they were more casual friendships...at work friendships that never went outside of work.
Now I have women friends again. Both in my neighbourhood and on the internet. Also a few male friends in both places. But I would say my very best friend is a woman I met on the internet months ago, whom I keep in contact with regularly. I hope to be able to meet her in person some day, but I hope most that our friendship lasts a very long time.

My husband is one of my best friends, but there are some things that he just doesn't get! My sister is another of my best friends, but there are some things that we don't have similar experiences with. My parents are also some of my best friends. They teach me so much and we make each other laugh and sometimes cry.. and sometimes they make me pull my hair out! My best girlfriend moved to a different state a few months ago... we don't get to talk like we used to. My dog... she's there for everything! She listens to everything I say, makes me get off my behind and go outside for awhile to play. I love them all and could never choose one "best".

Very Good on your choice of best friend. My wife is my best friend and I have made it known at work. But maybe I'm odd. I don't hear anybody jumping forward in agreement over there. Hmmmm. At least we are doing and believing what we feel in our hearts about our best friend.
