It's used in online financial transactions. Google on "Secure Sockets Layer" or "SSL" and "https" for insight into that.

Google on "Pretty Good Privacy" or "PGP" for other ideas.

It's also used in wireless networking. Google on something like "wireless networking security"

Wikipedia is often a good source for this level of question, and is usually a top hit on a Google search like those I've recommended.

"Ron Rivest" is a famous cryptography researcher. That's another good place to start.
