Many of you are lucky... My parents listened to very little music so my first music was something along the lines of Spice Girls... it took me a while to find Tom Petty and that led to the rest of classic rock.

Isis: I honetly would love to know too. I have no recollection of how I stumbled across his name but I somehow did, went on Yahoo! Music (there was no youtube at the time) fell in love with You Don't Know How It Feels, took my allowance and went out to buy Full Moon Fever. And his name isn't as famous as Floyd or the Beatles or the Stones, but there was something about his name that made me interested.

Well, not just my parents...the entire side of my dad's family.

My mom and her family are musically inept. None of them are really into it (besides my cousin whose favorite singer is Kenny Chesney), which I find a bit sad.

My dad's side of the family, however, are a bit nuts when it comes to music. I've been watching concert footage and critiquing albums since before I can remember. I remember one time specifically....when By Your Side by the Black Crowes (not classic rock, but still good) came out. I was 10 years old and in the car with my dad...we had just picked up the CD. He asked my opinion about every song and I was happy to give it to him. On long car rides with my papaw when I was young, we would sing along to Highway 61 Revisited. My granny and uncle took me to my first concert when I was 12. My dad taught me how to play guitar by teaching me Pink Floyd and Tom Petty songs.

In my house, music was ALWAYS playing. I was lucky...when it comes to music, I got a boost.

Edit: I'm curious...how did you discover Tom Petty? Did you hear a song of his on a movie or on TV and want to hear more? Or through a friend? Something else?

I'm over 25, but I was into classic rock from my teens on. It had nothing to do with my parents, who were more into country or middle-of-the-road "rock." I like that stuff, too, but I started listening to a "hits of the day" channel that played stuff like the Police and Journey and Van Halen, and that led me to wanting to hear stuff that was a little more rocking on a regular basis. So, I found the local classic rock station, and the rest is history.

Classic rock actually affected my school work in high school, because I found an all-night request show where the DJ played more eclectic stuff you couldn't hear during the day. I'd stay up late, listening and learning music that was new to me, and get up tired.

I wish the internet had been around back then, because finding "new" bands you want to hear is easy now. Back then, it was a matter of listening to the radio and hearing what they happened to play, going to record stores and looking for interesting things (and buying them and taking a chance since they usually didn't have a way to listen before you bought), and buying rock encyclopedias that gave bios and discographies. All of this was in the late '80s, which shows how quickly things changed.

Well I didn't discover through my parents. My dad loves to listen to the Beatles (and other bands, mostly softer classic rock bands) as well as stuff that isn't exactly rock, but R&B, soul, funk, etc.

He claims that by forcing me to listen to the oldies, I changed my musical tastes, but that's not exactly how it worked.

The first classic rock band I truly began to listen to was Led Zeppelin. I guess I discovered classic rock through my algebra teacher, since his favorite band was Led Zeppelin (or so I think). I decided to look them up and gave "Stairway to Heaven" a spin and found it pretty interesting.

Afterwards, I had a little more interest in music, and I often wandered around forums looking at the music sections. Typical classic rock bands were discussed...AC/DC, Queen, Pink Floyd, etc. Looked into them; found them brilliant.

After that, I began looking at some new bands through the oldies station and classic rock station on the radio, along with searching on YouTube. I discovered some pretty interesting bands and genres.

So yeah, that's pretty much how I discovered classic rock. I'm always looking for new (old) bands. The music is like drugs now.

Age: 14, but 15 on October 18!

I got into classic rock because it was what my parents always played.

My mom's a fan of the soft rock, early pop, and country, so I know a few of Carole King's and The Eagles' songs, as well as about three albums worth of the Beatles by heart.

My dad, on the other hand, is much more of a heavier, but still mellow, rocker. He's the one that really got me into Pink Floyd :D. He likes Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Foreigner, Bad Company, and a bit of Black Sabbath when he's in the mood.

They both really like southern rock, American or otherwise. My mom likes the Doobie Brothers and that Supertramp song... you know, the one with the harmonica. My dad leans more towards Lynyrd Skynyrd.

My taste shifted from my mom's to my dad's when I was about twelve. I'm so grateful that I was given this spectacular music. My mom and dad are glad that I at least listen to stuff that they like as well. No fights over the radio dial for us :D

I'll be 23 Mon oct 15th-a good portion of what got me into classic rock, was from my parents, with their vinyls... Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Van Halen, The Allman Brothers, King Crimson,George Thorogood, ect.. But for the majority/ remainder of what got me into it was me and my love for music.. when i brought my self to listen and take a liking to classic rock, i listened to a lot Black Sabbath,-Ozzy(Randy Rhoads days),Boston, Steve Miller band, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, 80's bands like Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Whitesnake,Aerosmith,Queensryche,Van Halen,Scorpions,Skid Row,ect..and soo much more.. so there are a lot of bands that i definitely discovered on my own also.. growing up, throughout high school, and in my early 20's- i loved the 90's modern rock era, as well.. hence Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Red hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Hole, Faith No More, Korn, Deftones, Metallica, Megadeth, Nine inch Nails, 311, Marilyn Manson, No Doubt, Green Day, Candlebox, Pantera,Stone Temple Pilots, Temple of the Dog, Tool, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine,Silverchair,ect.. so i think i have a really wide-diverse range of different music for classic rock/modern rock!! that i've developed from childhood- and from adolescence (on my own)

Well,it wasn't through my parents. There was a commercial on Eurosport for some classic rock CD collection,I was watching Eurosport a lot at the time, and in this commercial they were showing some songs from that collection and I really got to like them.So I started to search for those songs and I found a lot more than I was looking for and I liked what I found. So I became a classic rock fan and I'm still one. It's been so for some years now.
I'm 22 by the way.

I discovered it by myself. I heard "Band On The Run" on the radio one day about 6 years ago, found out it was by Paul McCartney, and then went out and bought one of his greatest hits Cd's. At the time I didn't even know he was a Beatle, I just liked his solo stuff. Then when Beatles 1 came out, I got into the Beatles, and since then I've just been hooked on classic rock.

There are just so many great bands that most people don't know about, which is a shame, as a lot of it is just as good as what's out there today.

Joba Chamberlain, this is the best franchise pitcher under 25 and is the reason why the yankees do not have Johan Santana now. Fantastic Fastball, great off speed. TOOOO MUUCHH Talent to give up on. Plus hes working outa the pen, but he is soon going to be a starter. Joba will be in the headlines for the next decade.

I actually started getting into classic rock after I rode Aerosmiths Rockin Roller Coaster in Orlando...I loved the music and got some good songs from my dad...I ended up seening them live (my first concert) a few months later...that was the start of it. Aerosmith lead me to other bands like Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, etc. Im very glad i got into classic rock...I cant take the music these days...except for bands like Foo Fighters.
