I had to go out to the peach tree and pick a switch (I think that hurt more than the switching) and if it wasn't good enough I went back until it was... Then I got it twice as bad for not getting a good one the first time.

Lord yes, why did you remind me? I would have much preferred my father's belt. Sometimes mom would wait for my dad to punish us and other times make us get a switch. I really hated that switch!!!
These days if a parent punishes a child it's child abuse. Maybe that why so many young people get into so much trouble. Spare the rod and spoil the child.

You all had kind parents. My dad was a real nasty brute when it came time to give a beating...and it WAS literally that.
He used a four inch wide thick leather razor strop to beat us when he was angry. After he switched to a safety razor, he drilled 1/2 inch holes all over that strop to make it hit harder and bruise more. My oldest brother took that strop out of the house when he was 12/13 years old and threw it away far from home.
So then Pop fashioned himself a wooden paddle that looked very much like a ping-pong paddle, except it also had those 1/2 inch holes drilled through it for maximum pain. When he ended up breaking that on my back one time, he switched over to his construction boot, which he would use on my head.
Like I said...you had kind parents.

didn't have to pick out a switch -- Daddy was in the Navy and you would be surprised how bad those cloth belts stung !!
then in the late 60's he got a belt that was about 2 inches wide -- leather with the holes with the grommets to look "cool" -- boy did those air holes make it sting !!
my butt hurts just thinking about it

Yes, my brother and I had to pick one and if it was to small mom would go get one, ouch, we learned what size to get real quick. My little sis NEVER got switched, she was small for her age and would always blame us for everything our mom would always say"you two knew better she didn't" boy did that make us mad.
