As a minuimum, all engines require two per cyllinder. (one intake, one exhaust) Some performance engines have 4 valves per cyllinder, normally you will see some indication on the valve covers you will see "QUAD" or "24 valve" So, a 4-cyllinder engine will have, as a minimum, 8 valves. 6 or 8-cyllinder engines will have either 12 or 16 valves as a minimum. If there are 4 valves per cyllinder then this will be 16, 24, or 32 respectively.

In older cars up until the late eightieshad 2 valves per cylinder,
so an eight cylinder engine would have 16 valves.

now in the newer cars an engine whas up to 4 valves per cylinder,
so if you have an eight cylinder with four valves per cylinder it has 32 valves.

hope this helps.
