Aww, c'mon now. I teach this stuff and we NEVER say that the US saved the UK... we use the word "Allies". We also refer the UK as "our mother country". There is much respect and love for the UK in the US. Given the chance, many people would visit in a heartbeat.

Looking through the eyes of the US at that time, you have to understand that the US saw a horror story unfolding. Invasion of countries by fanatics in Germany. We couldn't even fathom that the Europeans would be so cruel to each other and killl each other. Millions dying in concentration camps. The Japanese raping and pillaging Nanking. An unbelievable world.
But if you give out bad, bad will come back to you. Hitler was persecuting some of his finest scientists, who escaped and let the US in on some of his most important intelligence secrets. They then developed that thingy called the atomic bomb. Not nice.

So please. Have you seen how low the dollar is? Give us a break. We have good hearts.

PS Good friends pay each other back when they borrow. Other countries have not. You did in January. Thank you for honoring that.

Only half correct. In fact the UK paid off the debt for Lend-Lease immediately after the war (The US was already holding £300 billion of British Gold Bullion at the time). However because of this there was insufficient resources left for reconstruction. Attlees Government then had to negotiate a new loan (in the event insufficient), and it is this which has been recently finalised.

Last Christmas. Britain was the only country to pay its war debts in full. Let no American tell you that they "saved your ***" in World War II - they were handsomely paid for every ounce of help they gave whilst those of us who saved the world for more altruistic reasons were reduced to penury so that they could grow rich off our backs.

Yes it was New Years day this year.

Very generous of them to 'give' us all that help wasn't it.

It was due to the Lend-Lease that we lost our empire and they became a super-power. Alterior motive of Dollar signs maybe?
