Why are the same people who complained about the governmets response to hurricane Katrina willing to put the government in charge of healthcare? Will the gimme gimme people never learn to not depend on the government for what they should provide themselves?

People are only poor because they make poor decisions. In America anyone with a work ethic and willing to learn can make a decent living. It is not the governments job to make sure you have healthcare, a place to live or a job, it is yours.

No where in the constitution does it ever mention any of that. People in socialized medicine countries UK for example have to wait 2 weeks for Xrays to come back...don't tax me because the poor make bad decisions.

My sentiments exactly... I'm so sick of the "welfare mindframe"... The gov't gave a heck of alot of money to the Katrina ravaged New Orleans area and they used that money to rebuild/repair their casino's and make sure their precious Mardi Gras was still being held... Why not give that money to those who lost everything and let them rebuild or start over somewhere else?... I guess until people grow up and start taking responsibility for their own lives we will all ways have the "gimme gimme" people around... Truly sad!

This not absolutely not true" people are poor because they make wrong choices" at least not all of the time...you need to study the welfare state and read upon all of the presidents who were against social policies.....they were only about making policies to help white people in general....but if a situation happened that effected them as well then they would try to come up with other policies to help everybody...but they still never believed in helping the poor and especially Africans living in America....it's true if you don't believe go and take a class on ethnic studies or better yet take some social work class......the majority of our presidents were racist

It's not just the poor who can't afford healthcare these days. With the cost of healthcare getting so astronomically high HMOs and insurance companies are cutting back on the services provided and average working people can't afford to cover the difference, especially while trying to cover the rising prices of everything else. If the cost is too much for the HMOs and insurance companies to handle, then what makes you think that average working class Joe Blow can afford to cover it.

You dont' have to be poor to be caught in a healthcare crisis. If the main breadwinner in an average working family gets sick with cancer, even with insurance their co-pays can amount to tens of thousands of dollars (maybe higher depending on what kind of treatment he gets). If he looses his job (which includes loosing the insurance) because he's too sick go back to work it gets even worse. Then if the spouse has to cut back on her hours to take care of the former breadwinner then the situation gets even worse still. The rise in bills and loss in income would be too much for your average working family (even worse if it's a single person) to handle. The government is the only entity that has (or has access to) the kind of funds that could take care of this.

My question is why is the cost of healthcare so high, and does it really have to be?

if u were born into a poor family there's nothing u can do about it. so if u have to suffer from any ailment (from a ear infection to cancer) and you or your family does not have the money is it your fault? I guess people in the middle class and lower should just stop feeding their families and put all their money into corrupt insurance companies and receive less than quality healthcare. or maybe the people who take all that d.a.m.n money out of our paychecks can start spending that money on keeping the people of our country healthy for a change.

The response to Katrina was poor because INCOMPETENT PEOPLE were in charge of FEMA and didn't do what they were supposed to do. A government run healthcare can work if COMPETENT PEOPLE are in charge of it. Plenty of other countries have it and you don't see people dying left and right.
