yes, plants use oxygen at night... even water plants
Plants and Oxygen: An Explanation
Posted by Dr. Maoshing Ni
However, plants can't produce glucose, carbohydrates and oxygen without light. To get through the night, most plants reverse the process of photosynthesis and breathe, like you and I, by burning carbohydrates and oxygen while producing carbon dioxide and water. So surround yourself with plants during the day but remove them from your bedroom at night when you sleep.

to correct some wrong answers, at night plants use oxygen and release carbon dioxide, only when they are in a bright room will they use photosynthesis and create oxygen and use carbon dioxide. In the big picture plants just make a bit more oxygen during the day than what they use at night so because of the small surplus of oxygen they are thought of being "oxygen creators" people with too many fish in a small pond can sometimes have a fish kill when too much algae is in the pond, at night it can deplete the water of the O. Your room will never be air tight enough that they will take away your oxygen at night, as with they will never substantially raise your oxygen level in the room during the day.

Like almost all living things, plants use oxygen for their processes all the time. During the day, photosynthesis uses light to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide in excess of the plant's needs. At night, the living processes continue to use O2 but little or no CO2 is being converted. On the whole, the daylight production overwhelms the nght time use so there is considerable net production each day.

Although plants do respire (need oxygen) at night, the amount is tiny compared to the availability of oxygen in the home.
However, a greater concern would be for allergy and asthma sufferers, in that the soil surrounding some houseplants may have molds and mildews, and dust accumulating on leaves which may cause problems.

Plants need carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. Animals need oxygen and emit carbon dioxide. If any thing you would flourish. :D Plants need carbon dioxide no matter what time of day. They never need oxygen.
