A gas tank with a capacity of 18 gallons is empty. A pump can deliver g gallons of gas every t seconds. In terms of g and t, how many seconds will it take this pump to fill the tank?

This is just a rate times time = total amount
Let x = time required to fill tank
Let r (the rate of fill) = g/t or number of gal in t sec.
Total tank capacity is 18 gal
18 gal = g gal/t sec times x
18 gal/g gal/t sec = x
or x = 18t sec

First divide 18 by g to see how many times it takes to fill the tank, then multiply by t seconds per time.

So 18/g times t simplifies to 18t/g
