It's not easy, but you need to weigh the pros and cons. What value does this relationship have? Does it make you feel good or bad. Make a decision and then, in moments of weakness, remind yourself why you decided to end the relationship. Stop all contact with the man. No texts, no emails, no phone calls...nothing.

You have to consider that relationship as a stepping stone to the next and move on. Try to do things that will help get past that and keep you busy - take up jogging, for example, or work out at a gym. I once read, and believe, a first relationship is never a failure if it leads to a second lasting relationship.
remember the Gestalt prayer:
I am I and you are you
I am not in this world
To live up to your expectations
And you are not here to live up to mine
But if we meet by chance it is beautiful
If not,
It can't be helped.
Just tell yourself that the differences between you and he couldn't be helped and the relationship and love to come will be beautiful when you come upon it by chance

Write yourself up an emotional bank: one column for deposits (good things), one for withdrawals (bad things). Give each debit/credit a value. Work out if you end up in the red or the black, that might help you decide if you are getting more than you are losing. If you are in the red, just keep reminding yourself of that.
An important tip: try not to let sentiment get in the way when assigning a value. You need to be objective.

That is a very difficult situation. I was in something like that and after long enough I just realized that I deserved something more. You have to make an effort to move forward and not look back. You will probably always care about him but you have to do whats best for you. Good luck.

You need to move on. If you have been on and off for five years that should tell you that it is not right for you. Get out!
