I'm shocked that no one said the Second Battle of the Atlantic, 1939-1945....
the RN and RCN won the U-boat war; 600 plus of 750 U boats sunk were sunk by ships flying the White Ensign, and if that battle hadnt been won, there never would have been a D-Day...

The 3rd Canadian Division landed at Juno beach on D-Day and encountered light resistance. But the next day they met their nemesis the 12th SS ("Hitler Jugend") and the 101st SS Heavy Tank Battalion. On June 8th the 12th SS carried out their 2nd execution of captured Canadian POW's. By June 11, 1017 Canadians have been killed in action & 1814 wounded in the D-Day landings and engagements at Authie & Putot-en-Basin and the Caen area. Wittman's lone Tiger stopped the entire division on the first assault on Caen. For that, he received the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves & Diamonds...oops, i forgot, we're talking of the Canadians, sorry.
On July 4, the battle to finally take all of Caen and the surrounding area commences. After a massive air bombardment on July 7, the 1st British Corps & 3rd Canadian Division succeed in taking the Northern part of Caen, with heavy casualties
Montgomery orders the Canadians to launch an attack to trap the retreating German armour. Canadian General Guy Simonds launches Operation Totalize and uses artificial moonlight and armoured personnel carriers. Operation Totalize fails
The 2nd Division conducted Operation JUBILEE, a large-scale raid on Dieppe, France in Aug 1942 with the 4th and 6th Canadian Infantry Brigades, suffering extensive losses in the landing and the ensuing withdrawal.
Both divisions saw heavy action in the Netherlands in late 1944 and took part in the final offensives in 1945
