That wouldn't quite work to drive the cost of petrol and diesel down, if only because getting cooperation on the scale necessary to put a noticeable dent in the price of fuel would be nearly impossible, with millions upon millions of gallons of gasoline and diesel being sold on a day to day basis. Even when the message hit the major media outlets in the U.S. asking people "do not purchase fuel on day x," the response was luke warm. Refusing to purchase from BP, ESSO, or Exxon, and moving all of your fuel spending to other fuel suppliers would only hurt the supply of those vendors, giving them an excuse to increase prices, and for BP to follow suit.
A lot of fuel stations are owned by jobbers, dealers, resellers, and franchisers. Their fuel products may not even be branded by any company, but could be unbranded fuel sold by the companies targeted by this campaign.
Even if everybody stopped buying BP at company owned and operated stores, it wouldn't halt their sales altogether. The big money maker for oil companies is in their commercial fuel sales and customer support.
Finally, you should also consider that a big portion of the cost of fuel can be attributed to taxes.

In the Uk this is more of a tax issue. Bloody Ken Livingston has just done a deal with Venezuala for cheaper fuel so that people on income support can enjoy half price days out on the buses. I would´ve awarded that privelige to the key workers instead. I hate Ken

No, I don't think so. But I do know that the USA would have cheaper gas prices if they used the oil that is here in the USA, rather than get it from over seas!
