I usually get 5 or 6 hours of sleep, but whenever I don't have school, i usually get 9 hours of sleep. Everyday when i go to school, i get SO tired and cant concentrate! I can't take any pills of course because i am taking a medication that says i cant take it with any other ones (and my parents dont think that pills are the answer for this.) Have any advice?

I find and I swear by this- listening to music via my MP3 player does the trick everytime. I have had insomnia for yrs. I routinely go to bed late. But for you, esp on school days, develop a habit of going to bed at the same regular time as a routine. Initially, you might need an alarm clock to wake up; but eventually your body biological clock will take over and dictate the bedtime and the time to wake up.

Avoid drinking coffee or soda that contain caffeine just before going to bed. Avoid going to bed on a full stomach. Refrain spicy, gassy foods at night. Take a warm bath at night to relax. Read a book or magazine or watch a boring TV show. I don't know what meds you are on.

However, remember, that some meds can cause insomnia as a side effect You should try to stay away from meds for sleep and definitely for keeping you awake. They can make you too jumpy ; jittery ; more fatigue the following day. Sedatives can make it habitual ;loss of control.and can lead to drug dependence. Yoga, meditation, breathing; relaxation techniques also helps. So does pleasant thoughts, and avoiding stress.

You need to get 8 hours of sleep EVERY night, otherwise you pay the price and will be tired. The reason you are getting 9 hours on the weekend is your body is making up for lost time. You don't need special medication. Simply be consistent and get 8 hours of sleep. Remember the adage from Ben Franklin, early to bed, early to rise? It is important for your health to get you 8 hours of sleep. Try setting your alarm an hour earlier than you need. You will be ready to go to bed faster at the end of the day rather than staying up late and playing catch-up on the weekends.

Do breathing exercises..be aware that when you get into bed your heart will be racing if you've done your teeth, raced up the stairs and undressed etc....just listen to yourself breathing for a minute or less...then breathe in slowly and then exhale slowly.... do 5 or 6 rounds of this and then let your breathing return to normal...notice how your heart-beat has slowed..,,now, breathe more slowly in..and hold your breath for a few seconds then slowly exhale...do this again for another 6 or so times and notice how relaxed and calm you feel....repeat maybe a few more times, always listening to your heart-beat and being aware of your breathing...Works for me every time....!
P.S. My son has a mild form of A.D.H.D. and can only get to sleep with telly or the radio on.!

Warm relaxing shower, then a warm glass of milk.
Listen to some soft music and let your mind float away with the music.

Have the room cool and dark also.
