For us, here, in the United Kingdom, the Second World War began, at 1100hrs., on 03 September, 1939, - that, was the time, that had been specified, for the withdrawing of German troops, from POLAND.

In his famed speech, of that time, British Prime Minister of the day, - NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN, - said that:- "UNLESS GERMANY WAS PREPARED, TO WITHDRAW HER TROOPS, FROM POLAND, BY ELEVEN O'CLOCK, THEN, A STATE OF WAR, WOULD EXIST, BETWEEN US!"

He went ON, to tell the British people, that:- "I HAVE TO TELL YOU, - NOW, - THAT NO SUCH UNDERTAKING, HAS BEEN RECEIVED, AND THAT, - CONSEQUENTLY, - THIS COUNTRY IS, AT WAR, WITH GERMANY!"

How can I remember the details? Well, - I was NOT there, personally, - but, - for my MOTHER, - that day, - 03 SEPTEMBER, 1939, - was a "SPECIAL" day, - it was HER FOURTH BIRTHDAY.

As for the END of World War Two, - there are TWO dates, to consider!

The War against Germany, and her allies, in Europe was declared as the STROKE of MIDNIGHT, (London time), at the start od 08 MAY, 1945. This was celebrated as "VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY", - or "V.E. DAY".

The Victory over JAPAN, though, did not materialise until 15 AUGUST, 1945, - "VICTORY OVER JAPAN" - "V.J. DAY"!

And, even THEN, the formal articles, - detailing the TOTAL, - and UNCONDITIONAL. - SURRENDER of Japanese miltary forces, were NOT signed, by ANYONE, - until 02 SEPTEMBER, 1945!

That date, also, is "INGRAINED" in my heart, - because my Grandfather, - may God rest his soul, - was a PRISONER OF WAR, - held BY the Japanese, - for more than a YEAR!

He, - thankfully, - SURVIVED, - but MANY of those, held WITH him, did NOT!

Lest we FORGET, the SACRIFICES, made by our forefathers, in pursuit of PEACE.

As it says, in the famous work of poetry, recited on Armistice day:

"THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD, - AS WE, THAT ARE LEFT, GROW OLD

AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, - NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN,

AT THE GOING DOWN, OF THE SUN, - AND IN THE MORNING,

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!"

That poem, - entitled, "FOR THE FALLEN", - is, - more USUALLY, - associated, with the Armistice, of NOVEMBER 11, 1918, - which signalled the end of "WORLD WAR ONE", - but, the words apply, EQUALLY, to those whose lives were lost, - or altered, forever, - in the SECOND WORLD WAR!

These included ONE of my Grandfather's BROTHERS, - who was killed on the "D-DAY" landings.
