there aren't a lot of ways to help if it's chronic. make sure he drinks a lot of water (at least 8 cups a day). be careful that he doesn't drink too much, as it can be dangerous. if he drinks 8 cups plus whatever to quench his thirst, that's probably good. this will help keep it soft and hopefully he won't feel as much pain. could he take over the counter laxatives? if it's safe, just using it when he really needs it might help keep things moving!
yogurt and other dairy might be good- if he's lactose intolerant, yogurt is still ok
other things that might help- fiber (best if it comes with a healthy diet and less from supplements)
prunes (are very high in fiber) if he doesn't like whole prunes, he could have prune juice (even watered down)
exercise, just make sure he is ok to exercise and will not get hurt; swimming might be good
what not to have excessive amounts of:
rice
ripe bananas (unripe ones may help!)
do you know what causes the constipation?
if it's medicine related, then there isn't a whole lot that will help :(
if it's natural, then diet will help a little bit
there are many foods out there on websites that claim to have laxative powers
really- most of them don't- it's only when taken in huge amounts, like boiling 100 pounds down to a liquid!!
a warm pack on the spot where it's tender may ease the muscles and provide some pain relief
good luck!

First, think about what makes your situation unique and then consider what modifications may be necessary for the advice given and always consult your doctor! For instance, in my case, the constipation is due to many medications; therefore, I have had to increase the amounts of curatives to a higher degree than the answers listed in your forum. Start small and build slowly! My doctor loves what I’ve been doing because it helps with constipation, lowers my cholesterol, and it is a healthier diet than I used to be on.
Some people are allergic or hypersensitive to certain foods. Try eliminating and reintroducing one food item every few weeks and see if your bowels don't like a specific food.
Avoid or decrease bulking foods such as chocolate, rice, banana, animal fats & meats, dairy (cheese, ice-cream, butter...). I’ve even had problems from ingesting too much whole grain foods and fatty foods.
Although caffeine is a stimulant and may get your bowel muscles contracting, it is also a diuretic, which will tend to dehydrate the body. Also, remember that alcohol is a diuretic and a depressant, rather than a stimulant. People tend to forget that chocolate typically has caffeine and emulsifiers, so it dehydrates and bulks.
Drinking too much water, too quickly, can lead to a condition known as “water intoxication” and to a related problem resulting from the dilution of sodium in the body, “hyponatremia”, so don't go overboard! Also, replenish those electrolytes! For more information: Start with the link below. In addition, most of our food contains large amounts of water. For practical demonstrations, play around with dehydrating food in the oven, making smoothies in blenders, or if available, run items through a juicer.
Over eating can be a very bad idea. As an example, I recently binged on about 6 pounds of pizza… I have learned my lesson!
Drinking hot liquids tend to work better than cold liquids. Just try to have something like stewed prunes, hot broth, or a non-caffeinated drink, if possible.
Having an adrenaline rush before a race, while scouting a rapid, or before going into big surf, have all been quite productive for me.
Always try to have a bowel movement when the urge is present. By ignoring it, people risk decreasing or loosing the urge, which may then lead to constipation.
Perform a search online with words or phrases such as “organic constipation remedies”. There is a plethora of information!
Just so you know what is really in your food, you could buy whole organic items such as flax seed, Kashi blend, rolled oats, etc. They can be cooked as is, or ground into a coarse flour with the use of an electric grinder.
My current curatives per day:
Note: all measurements taken while foods are raw/dried
Exercise: Stretch, aerobic, and resistance.
2-3 L. of water or Gatorade (I weigh: 180lb.)
4-6 cups of prune juice
5-10 dried plumbs/prunes
6 TBSP flax seed (freshly ground)
1 cup rolled oats or other whole grains
1.5 cups of frozen berries
3 pieces of fruit (typically plumbs)
24 Oz. fresh vegetables
A few TBSP of nuts and seeds
3/4 cup of cooked legumes
1/4 cup whole grain brown rice
1/4 cup corn
I'm not a doctor, and I recommend that you consult one about the advice listed here. :)
Good luck!

Your health food store would have tons of remedies and instructions for using them. I prefer Colon Cleanse capsules. Other people prefer Aloe. I would suggest shopping with him in mind and see what is likely going to help him the most. It is very common to become more likely to get constipated as you get older. You're very likely right about the left-side tenderness. But if your granddad ever has blood or mucus in his stool, it is time to see a doctor.

I hope you find a remedy your granddad can use!

There is a new yogurt on the market called Activia and it contains bifidus regularis. This yogurt tastes really good and comes in several different flavors and even comes with a money back guarantee if you have not seen results within two weeks of faithfully taking this product. If is he not lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy or fruits I would give it a try.

Your grandfather should eat fewer animal foods and more plant foods. Eating dried fruits keeps me regular, and I have two or three apples a week. Brown rice is better than white rice; if he eats grains, they should be whole grains. Oatmeal is also good.
And bananas are not binding. The reason they are recommended to someone with the opposite problem from your grandfather's is they replace electrolytes.

Try a combination of 1 teaspoon liquorice root, 1 teaspoon aniseed and 1 teaspoon of peppermint tea - loose leaf organic variety from any good health food store ............. the liquorice will heal and soothe his digestive tract and regularise his bowel motions, the peppermint will also aide enormously in digestion as it helps the body metabolise fats and lift his spirit and mood and the aniseed has that lovely sweet flavor !!
***edit***
Drink a pot or two throughout the day and his energy levels will also increase. As you will buy the organic variety you can actually refill the pot a couple of times before the leaves are spent.

There is a tea called "get regular". It is an herbal laxative. It is sold at most regular grocery stores in their "natural" department. You can try that with a little honey (to sweeten). Just read the directions and make sure you steep it long enough!

use psylium husks. Get them from the health food store. Just mix 2 desertspoons in some juice, or water, and then drink very quickly, as it thickens up very fast. Do this a couple times a day, and soon the stools should be slipping out.
