After WWI Germany was suffering from the burden of war reparations that saddled the country from the Treaty of Versailles. There was constant political unrest and the new government, the Weimar Republic was shaky at best. There were many smaller political action committees...specifically the Communists and the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP or "Nazi") vying for control.
In the late 20's Germany was starting to rise back up from the ashes. Industry began booming, the Krupp Iron Works producing train wheels and railcars amongst other things...and people were back to working. The Great Depression hit America and the ripple effect hit Eurpoe as well. But Germany took it directly on the chin..having managed to get one knee up on the mat before being knocked backwards flat.
The value of the Mark was so bad that a families life savings couldn't even purchase an egg. You can see newsreels of banks tossing Deutchmarks out their doors and children playing with literally stacks and stacks of Marks in the streets.

So here comes Hitler. He promises (one of many) to freeze the union labor rates and put everyone back to work to earn a wage. Now when you're family is starving and someone comes along and promises he can put bread on your table...naturally you'll listen closely and do most anything to achieve that goal.
Granted thats a nutshell version but pretty much the way it went.

The impact of the Great Depression was particularly severe in Germany. Unemployment hit millions, others lost their savings as banks folded. 60% of each new university graduating class was out of work. The Weimer government failed to respond effectively to the crisis. Heinrich Bruning, the chancellor at the time, feared inflation and budget deficit more than unemployment. Rather than spending to stimulate the economy and create jobs, Bruning opted to increase taxes then implement wage cuts and spending reductions. Needless to say, Brunings measures failed and inturn increased unemployment and public suffering.
Hitler benefitted greatly from Brunings disastrous policy response. with public discontent soaring, membership of the Nazi Party increased to record levels.
