Ok, so I was walking my dog today and he likes to go to the irrigation pond near my house and watch the frogs jump in the water. =) well today when we were there, we saw a yellow bellied slider out basking (about a foot long). I got about 3 feet away from it and just watched it, the poor thing must have had a rough life, it is missing an eye AND has a fish hook embedded into the left side of its head. It is so infected that it looks like the poor thing ate a ping pong ball. I felt so bad for it that I went to go grab it and try to help it, but as soon as I got close enough to grab it, it bolted back into the water and as it tried to submerge, it just floated back up. I feel so bad for it. I don't want to take it out myself, I just want to take it to the vet and have them take it out. And if worse comes to worse, I will keep it with my other turtle. So how can I catch the turtle?

A trap (that won't harm it) with bait on the rock where it basks. Go to a sporting goods store. Tell them your story and I'll bet they can help you.

Go up the the bank of the pond.. you want to make a triangle shaped trap with sticks, the opening end smaller towards the water ,the larger end near the the bank. Place plenty of stick, think about a jail. Have them stick in the mud and out of the water.. You need some good smelling food try bacon, or fish if you can get it. Place it in the middle of your trap. Wait and see. It may work but hard to describe on the net.

Lay out a blanket or tarp where the turtle comes to bask in the day. Have rope or string attached to the corners. When the turtle is on the tarp or blanket pull in the ropes. A net will work also. I'm glad to see you care about taking care of the turtle that's a good thing.

You can try catching him with a net, but then I would pass him along to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Most local vets or wildlife agencies can put you in touch with a wildlife rehabilitator near you.
It is illegal to collect and posses most wild animals without proper licensing, including turtles, even if you are just trying to help.
A rehabilitator or wildlife agency will also be able to help you catch the turtle if you are having trouble.

See if you have a turtle rescue group in your area, or an SPCA society. You could call your local Animal Control and ask for information on who could rescue the animal if they won't do it. Good luck

Use a net. If you or your neighbors have a swimming pool, use the net that you clean the pool with.
