that is to say - without having won the world cup tournament to back up their claims (again)

hello poseidon
thank you for the history of the tournament but i was thinking of the teams who are playing now
just because a team won twenty years ago (or even four years ago) surely doesn't make them the best now
won't this issue be decided when the winners pick up the cup next week?
i'm thinking - best in the world (now) not which team has the best history
isn't that usually how the best is decided? the current winners - i just think of athletics, football and all other sports - clearly in the southern hemiisphere you need to use history and startistics to make a sad present situation bearable
may be best team win.........

Ah well, they won the William Webb Ellis Cup or Rugby World Cup 20 years ago and still bleating about how great they are?

It's a shame how some countries have to go on and on and on about ancient victories isn't it, just drives you nuts? Give it another 21 years of the same and see how you feel then!! Lol.

Hello Michelle,

NZ actually did win the first ever William Webb Ellis Cup (Rugby World Cup) in 1987 when they co-hosted the tournament together with Australia. NZ beat France 29-9.

Australia have the best record with 2 wins and a Runner Up spot.

England have of course won the competition once beating Australia, but prior to that Australia beat them in 1991, when England hosted it.

If England go on to win this years final, they will become the joint best team along with Australia.

SO COME ON ENGLAND.

As far as NZ is concerned, talk is cheap. If they or any other nation wants to try to convince everyone they are the best team, they have to prove it. Actions speak louder than words.

Poseidon.

South africa are good contenders for the rugby world cup but not the other 2 really. Australia have cricket easily and have a good chance in the rugby but not in football. England is basically fairly well chanced in all 3, so I think the one most likely to win all three would be England.
