I'm 13 and I want to go on Birth Control to help with my periods. What long term effects would/could occur at my age?

I started using birth control to regulate my periods when I was 15 and I'm 24 now and been on them ever since! When I first started taking them I gained a little bit of weight but other than that I had no other effects. It helped a lot with both my periods and it helped clear my skin as well. I tried those bith control pills before where you only have 3 periods a year and I didn't really like them. Some people do but they didn't seem to do the trick for me. I highly recommend Ortho Tricyclen Low, they worked the best for me!

There is a new pill that gives you 3 or 4 periods a year. Good luck!

I also started taking birth control to clear up acne and lessen my awful cramps at 14 and I haven't had any trouble or gained any weight.

Don't use that one. That's called the Depo Provera shot. It's been linked to major bone density loss, causing major back problems in women. Don't use the patch, as it is linked to more strokes and blood clots than the pill. Go on the pill. You will regulate your periods that way, and it's also a good way to help if you have acne. There are the dangers of blood clots or strokes, but they are rare. I've been on the pill for about four years now, and it's the only way I can regulate my period.

Edit: Oh, yeah. I forgot about the weight gain. I gained a few pounds from it (no more than five), but that's it. And that's easily controlled by diet and exercise!

What has been going on with your periods? If they are really bad then you should see a doctor to make sure that the BC would really solve your problem. I have a friend that went on BC when she was 15 because her periods were so bad that she would miss a week of school a month becasue of them. Let a good doctor tell you what kind of BC is best for you.

the pill can deteriorate your womb and cause you problems with conceiving later in life when you're off it.
