I know everyone says to purchase the Seagate, but I found a pretty good deal on the Maxtor. I'm not so sure about the Maxtor though...My friend dropped his on the ground & it doesn't work anymore, so that's kinda discouraging me from buying one. Convince me otherwise...

This is the product I'm looking at btw: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8490572&st=maxtor+500+gb&type=product&id=1186003683700

Well, most hard drives today, have about the same reliability factors. Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, Fujitsu all are very reliable for the most part.

If you drop a Seagate on the ground it probably won't work either, Hard drives have mechanical parts in them and they will break. There are not built to be abused!

Any external Hard Drive that you drop on the ground is going to be broken. I've used Maxtor drives both internal and external for years and as long as I don't drop them they work great.
