Can Chronic Insomnia Have any affect on your mentality (besides bad judgment and slow reactions)??

i've had insomnia for coming up to a decade and have recently been diagnosed as chronic.

Im of sound mind and round body, and i get good exersize, fed well and such, pleanty of vitamins etc etc, and was thinking to myself this morning weather or not insomnia could have an affect on my mind, not just on my reactions and problem solving skills, i mean more like schizophrenia and demensia, and other such things.

Is this possible?

Not chronic insomnia!! But if you don't sleep at all for 5 days straight you will become delusional, your judgment will be impaired, you will start seeing things or hearing things that are not there then there is physical changes your body needs to sleep regularly to repair itself neurological and physical reasons has your doctor refered you to a counsellor? Have you done the usual stuff. How much do you sleep in 24hrs? you cant die from insomnia its debilating yes but it can age you quicker. Has your doctor prescribed you anything as 10 years you must ge getting close to why you cant sleep properly!!!

There is a woman with traumatic brain injury in England who has not slept in 18 years with no known ill effects. That is a rare condition. Most researchers would say that poor sleep affects your memory, concentration, attention, and other cognitive processes and could lead to psychotic tendencies, such as hallucinations and delusions.

By the way, you said "round body". I had sleep problems for many years. I lost 50 lb. and kept off 30. I have much fewer sleep problems, and back problems, at a lower weight.

If you dont have sufficient sleep for your body, yes.
I imagine you still sleep( otherwise you will be dead in 10 days)
It seems that you sleep a little and not sufficiently. I guess every normal person shall asleep around 8 hours but that depend on person:
some sleep less, some more.

After 2-3 days of not sleeping, hallucinations occur: like the screen becomes fuzzy.

It's definately possible. That whole lack of sleep thing can age your organs. When your organs age your body can't perform to it's fullest. Eventually it can even effect your neurologic pathways. If this pathway is continually going in the wrong direction it would become permanent and the "right" pathway would die. This could create some mental instabilities.

...Of course lack of sleep increases your propensity for being delusional, exhausted, irritable, depressed, and of course it also lowers your immune system. Sleeping and eating a balanced diet and getting excersize are all necessary components in remaining healthy, physically and mentally.
