A carburetor is a device made of aluminum, steel and zinc compounds which have very intricate metering circuits, jets, power valves and round venteuri shaped air / fuel intake bores.
There is a very good site: WIKIPEDIA, The Free Encyclopedia on line which fully explains how they operate. There are clear very understandable pictures which will clear up question you have.
