Both front and back lawns have big dead patches. We stuck to the watering rules laid down by the city. Want to know what is the proper way to care for lawn before winter comes and to give it the best chance come spring time.

You didn't say where you were located. Fall is the best time for sowing grass seed although if you are zone 4 or lower, it is getting a little too cold, now. You can buy a patch mixture at any of the big box hardware/lumber places. Just follow the directions on the package. That green stuff is really ugly but it works great!

Fertilize it at the end of October. Doing this makes the roots grow and thicken during the winter--it comes in thicker and healthier in the Spring!

Don't do anything until spring. If it's truly dead in the spring you can plant new seed. If it's just dormant it should come back on it's own come spring.

Kill the neighbors dog and the grass should grow back in time.
