There is a book I have on treating depression using Buddhist methods. It basically says that everyone tries to get over depression and feel bad because they can't. They recommend accepting it as part of yourself and learning to live with it. Instead of avoiding it, look at squarely and examine it.

Sometimes all forms of chronic pain are like that. I don't think you would die if it suddenly left you, and I don't think you should seek to avoid it. I think you should accept it and accept yourself. That does not mean that if you find a way to alleviate pain that you don't take it, but I think you will find it easier to make the right choices if you accept yourself and everything about you. Love yourself. You will be amazed to find that other people love you also, even if they have are hard time showing it. After you accept yourself, you will realize how difficuclt it can be to show this acceptance appropriately by yourself and others.

Old pain is something that you get used to. It's nice when it clears up for a couple hours though.
