Oil gets old in a car. It gets dirty. When the oil is too dirty, it won't do its job. When oil gets too old, then it won't do its job. If you don't know when the oil was changed last, then I suggest that you change it now to protect your vehicle. As far as the level is concerned, that is in-between two marks on the dipstick. You can only check the oil level with the engine off and the vehicle on a relatively level surface. Checking on a hill or slope will give false readings. Good luck!

If you don't know when the last time the oil was changed, and if the oil looks clean on the dipstick then you might be able to put it off awhile.

The end of the oil dipstick should have a couple of lines (sometimes a couple of holes), the oil line should fall someplace between these. Take it out and wipe it down, put it back in all the way, pull it back out and check it. That way you get a more accurate reading. Hope it helps.
