I have a friend who has been charged with assisted suicide because he counsoled a lady in Ireland about suicide. The lady later commited suicide. Assisted suicide is not illegal where I live. Yet he was arrested. Is it fair to arrest someone for something that your government does not have a law against,

A crime is commited if it is against the law where it happened. Your countries laws do not apply in another country, they have their own laws.

I'm not saying it's fair, and i'm not saying that it is. If it was illegal in Ireland to do such a thing, technically..that is where the "crime" happened. She lived in Ireland, and commited suicide there. Ireland has the jurisdiction to taek legal action even if it is this. Is this all that happened or is there more. I can't see where just talking to someone would get them arrested..there has to be more.

Teh above posters are generally right.

In addition...

Extradition happens between coutnries that have mutual treaties to do so.

Otherwise one or more coutnries would be havens for criminals to hide in, and no country wants that to happen.

OTOH, France generally won't expedite to the US prisoners facing the death penalty.

So I would say the rule is not if the crime was legal there or not but if the penalty they are facing is considered out of bounds in that country.

If he was IN Ireland when he counseled her; YES. If he was in his own country where it is not illegal and she came to him, I would think NO
