I recently removed a bunch of spyware and viruses from my computer, but now the internet connection doestn work. I've run diagnostic tests and they say that there is a problem with winsock (what is that?) and that my IP address is not valid or malfunctioning. I know that the DSL modem is working , because i have two more computers connected to it, and they work well. So how can I restore IP address and fix all my connection problems?

If WINSOCK is corrupted or removed, and that does happen with some spyware removals, you will have to repair the connector. This is a registry issue.
There is a repair tool
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
which does a good job in most cases.
You can also see the full (and I do mean FULL) issue from Microsoft.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

Once repaired your repair connection will work again as will pulling an IP and connecting to the net.

Good Luck.

If your PC is setup with System Restore, you might be able to restore it to an earlier point before you acquired the spyware.

Winsock isn't really used anymore - that generally refers to dialup connections.

Really, it could be one of dozens of reasons why you lost your internet connection, so it's next to impossible to troubleshoot without actually seeing the computer. I really all depends on what you (or the spyware/virus applications) did that caused it to stop working. You may have deleted some files necessary for TCP/IP to run & if that's the case, you might either need to reinstall your network adapter, or the TCP/IP protocol. But again, it's impossible to say.

The easiest solution is using System Restore, if it's available on your system. To check, right-click My Computer and click Properties. There will be a System Restore tab there, depending on what operating system you have.
