Ok. My mother wants me to get a bachelors, but i honestly have other plans. she wants me to be in college, but for the profession i want to prosue (Music producer, making beats) a college degree is not needed AT ALL!(trust me,i've checked, its not nessesary). So what i've decided to do is,leave the 4 year college that i'm at now to go to a community college for 2 years and get an associates degree in buisness so i can concentrate on my music. I know my mother will be upset but,the hell with it its my life ma, YOUR LITTLE BOY IS GROWN NOW. am i doing the right thing?

A four year degree will open up many more doors for you. At a four year school you can major in business and minor in music or vis-versa. Could you possibly know everything there is to know about music production? A large four year school will offer a greater range of courses in your areas of interest.

Of course you may be able to sell your mom on the community college idea if you suggest it as a way of saving money for a better four year school, and telling her that you need smaller classes.

The only successful music producer I know actually has a Masters Degree. He is very successful (awards and platinum records) and working with many names you would recognize. Please don't assume more education won't be helpful.

That's fine, but don't go running to mama when you can't pay your bills because you only have an associates degree and can't get a decent job while you work on your music.

You have no guarantee that you are going to hit it big and make any money from your music, so it would be good to have a FOUR YEAR degree as a back up and to have a steady, decent paying job while working on your music. Listen to your mother. There is no reason why you can't get the BA and make music.

My question to you would be; How are you getting yourself started on becoming a Music Producer? Have you auditioned? Do you have talent? Are you willing do another kind of job like a waiter to support youself for your music? Many have done this and you may to. If you are willing then do whatever you want. You can always go back to college.

If this is what you really want then yes you are doing the "right" thing... I would make sure that when you get to community college you include some english classes though...

Hundreds of studies have shown that the longer you stay in school, and the higher degree you attain, the more you earn and the higher job satisfaction you have. If you want to grow in your career the more education you have the better you will do.
