I know the motherboard is cheap but thats the only thing fitting budget. Do I get a better motherboard? Which one? If so, which component do I step down to keep the overall cost the same?

That motherboard is just fine, don't let any of these people on here tell you that you have to spend $300 just to get a good motherboard. I would definately drop the video card, because the next step down is the 8600GTS, which is junk for gaming. Stay with that setup.

I would just leave it as is because i would say go a little bit lower with the graphics card . But what is the point on having a mega processor but nothing to test its ability so it would be like a waste of money . As for a cheap motherboard its alright i would not say cheap unless your are comparing it to what you have right now. You could settle for an high intel core 2 duo processor but its evident that you need that much power for what i believe the gaming you want to do .

You did not say what you are using the PC for which is very important to determine the configuration. The set up is good as it is but I would go with a P35 mobo, either Gigabyte P35 or Asus P5k series board. If it is a gaming machine go with the core 2 E6850 processor, if it is a video editing machine stay with the quad.

You can always drop to a video card that isnt the best on the market , but sitll has good video memory and PCi-x, and improve your mobo, but that setup seems it will handle it itself pretty good ;)

cost cutting is never recomended if you have to have all of the pc experience and in future you might feel the other way so do it once and do it full
