go browns! great interception!
if the guy carrying the ball makes it to where he needs to get 1st down, but the defense comes along and drags him back, does it matter at all how far they got to begin with, or does it only matter where they end up?

It's called forward progress, the farthest point he reached is where the ball is marked.

The play stops when the whistle blows... the ref's give the offense or ball carrier something called "forward progress"... basically wherever the they ball carrier stops going forward and as long as they have possession, they play will be called, even though they may get pushed back, sometimes a few yards... but if you look at where the ref spots the ball... it will be to where THEY see the ball made it to the furthest point before the carrier starts going backwards... sometimes this rule is hard for the defense because they have limited time to try and strip the ball away from the carrier before the whistle is blown... but keep asking! I'm a female in a male's football world too, and we all have to start somewhere!!!

This question has been asked on several occasions, the refs will spot the ball on the person's forward progress, unless he went backward on his own to avoid a defender and was stopped

The ball will be spotted at the end of "FORWARD PROGRESS". So if your running in one direction and a guy pulls u backward, the ball is spotted where the guy grabbed u.

He is down at the point where his forward progress stopped. They can push him all the way back to the goal line, but the ball goes back up to where he was originally stopped.

It matters how far the runner goes...Its called forward progress...Even if he is knocked back, the ball is spotted as far forward as it goes...
