What is drop shipping?

I don't know what entails drop shipping and can't find an answer? HELP

Shipping direct to the consumer.

When I was in the wholesale distribution business and we didn't have in stock what the customer needed, we would call the manufacturer and have it "drop shipped" to the customer. They used UPS or a trucking company.
