I have 1 aunt and 1 uncle who had back surgery (fusions) and had terrific results. I spoke to lady who had fusion done by a neurologist-and also had awesome results. Unfortunately, for every one of those, there are 5 bad results-and I am included in the "bad" result category! I know you are in terrible pain and surgery sounds like such a relief AND it is if it goes correctly! But if not, you are looking of years of pain with no hope of relief. I now take 13 pills a day to cope. Please exhaust every option you can try before you give in to the fusion, it is forever! I wish you good health and relief in your future!

I have never had back surgery but am an OR nurse and assist neurosurgeons everyday with spinal fusions. On the whole I believe they help more than hurt. There is defiantly a healing curve and you really need to research your surgeon. Just because he , or she, says they are the best they may not be. I deal with approx 10 or a weekly basis but on 2-3 would I allow to operate on my family. I have seen many patients saved for chronic back pain and even paralysis . Research and make sure you are comfortable with the procedure and physician. Write down your questions as you think of them and don't let the Dr make you feel like its a stupid question or that you are wasting their time. Good Luck
