There are two steps to enabling security on the router. One set the router and TWO set the clients that are to connect.

Once a routers security access is enabled, of course the wireless clients without the key will drop!

You have to then "reconnect the client using the WEP key"

Simply click your wireless settings on the client machine, click on the SSID (name of the router) and reconnect..

It will then ask for the security code, enter your key )the same one you set on the router) and you will reconnect!

Your connection to your router drops when you choose that because you have to type in that wep key in order to be on the internet the router is putting out. The only way to connect to your router would be with that wep key again- which you should look at before you enable it- that way you know how to log back onto the internet with the router.

The only way to not be dropped off when you choose that is by hard wiring (with an ethernet cord) your computer to your router- it won't kick you off after you choose wep and it would allow you to change the wep key to whatever you like.

Good luck!

You should only perform configuration changes to your router from a WIRED connection or by utilizing the UPnP facility for your Network Places.
