Samwise Gamgee is the gardener of Frodo Baggins as was his father the Old Gaffer to Bilbo. His character does not have a lot of interaction with others but there are some key events.
Sam is very loyal and protective of Frodo. This is shown by his nearly drowning in an attempt to follow Frodo when he leaves the others. He also never trusts Gollum who he believes is trying to kill Frodo.
Sam is shy. This is shown in his dealings with Rose. He is obviously infatuated with her but it takes a long time before he even talks to her.
Sam is very serious. He doesn't understand the pranks of Pippin and Merry when they are stealing vegetables from the Farmer Maggot.
