I was just on the phone with a collection agency and I noticed a beeping noise in the background. I asked the lady about it and she said that they were recording the call. She told me about the recording AFTER it had already started. Is this legal?

It is illegal in some countries.

In the USA it is legal to record phone conversations provided
(a) the participants are told in advance that the phone calls may be recorded, or whatever ... such as monitored for quality assurance
(b) there is a special beeping sound that is associated with this call being recorded

Different states have different laws. If you want to know what is legal and illegal when it comes to collections and collection agencys, go to this website.

It helped me out when I was being harrassed about a small debt. I ended up filing a compaint with our states attorney general and eventually a lawsuit, and I won.

Yes it is LEGAL. If one of the parties in the conversation is doing the recording, it is legal.

A third party that is not party to the conversation can not record a call between two other people.

It is completely legal to record a call without informing the other party as long as one of those parties is doing the recording.

They are supposed to inform you before the conversation starts that the call is being recorded. Next time that happens and they do not say anything ask them if it is being recorded, and if they say yes, tell them that US law requires them to inform you at the beginning of the call. Most of these calls are made outside of the US, but they ARE informed of the laws here.
