We need to get rooms for about 10-15 people, and we're trying to get accom cheap but generally safe and comfortable. =)

Anywhere in Sydney is safe. At the moment, World Youth Day is being held at Randwick racecourse but there are moves to have the venue changed to the Olympic Park. "Cheap" and "Sydney" generally do not go together and there is going to be a lot of demand for World Youth Day. Your best bet would be to look at hotels near Central Station. There is a range of hotels there from backpacker to four star. Another area with cheaper hotels is Kings Cross but that area includes the red light district.

Websites to look at are http://www.sydney.com.au
http://www.whatsoninsydney.com.au and
http://wotif.com.au

The last gives cheap hotel rooms in the next two weeks but it gives contact details for hotels you might like to try.

Public transport in Sydney is good. If the event is at Randwick, there will be a fleet of buses between the racecourse and Central Station. If it is at Olympic Park, trains every two minutes will get people in and out.
