it is a flat-out drama in my opinion

depends on your sense of humor. some people think dumb and dumber was a funny movie. i didn't think it was. movies like spotless mind are usually considered a dark comedy which takes a particular sense of humor to understand and enjoy. it's not supposed to be funny like slapstick movies. it requires thought, and the ability to pick up on witicisms and irony.

It really is based on your particular sense of humor. Eternal Sunshine has a very dry and subtle sense of humor. It is usually not intended to make the audience erupt into obnoxious laughter in the theater (although sometimes they do). I think this movie is supposed to be funny simply because of its quirks in general.

it definately has funny moments. it's a different kind of funny though. my favorite is "carrie, i'm building a birdhouse". but seriously, try watching it again, it's pretty funny.
