Because the case if extremely high profile and these people either want to how that they care or use there involvement to further there own image. I very much doubt that the pope has any experience in either social care of the law and this fighting fund that has been setup to fund the search if open to corruption, with the Mccanns trying to use it to fund their libel case.
however i would like to think that all this involvement would result in bringing the child to safety, though the problems that both the British and Portuguese police are experiencing cannot help matters.

Apparently there's more than just Maddie's disappearance. It seems they don't want anyone to find out what happened that night because something else would come to the surface. I've got no idea what that might be, but it would explain all the secrecy surrounding parents and friends and high profile helpers.
