or does a person not change, but evolve into what he/she was in the beginning?
This woman i know, from an ultra-conservative family, who seemed to condemn even the thought of divorce, divorced because she had an affair with a married man. From being the critic of others' values, she won't mind now being called the mistress
Was she like that from the beginning or can an event completely change our values, like integrity?

I really don't know what "deeply ingrained" means.

The moral standards for most people aren't based on anything very substantial to begin with and so when some major temptation comes along they just change their standards. This woman probably realized that her moral values were based on family tradition and what moral authority does tradition have?

Sounds more like rebellion than a change; she most likely had no real values to begin with and didn't do anything about it until she got her divorce. Thumbing your nose at good and moral values makes you feel superior or more 'modern.. its really false sense of well being (or a false sense of consciousness). I honestly think some people are not born with any moral values, it would certainly account for serial killers and terrorists.

People change. Usually gradually, but sometimes an event triggers profound change. A person's values/opinions may be changed by many different experiences such as

Visiting a war region
Seeing what goes on in a slaughterhouse.
Being seduced
Getting to know someone personally who falls into a category that they previously held false generalities about.

etc.

Unfortunantely, we're all driven by our 'own' needs and wants.
It's easy to be critical of others and what others do...much
harder to be critical of ourselves.
People tend to base decisions on the 'here and now' and
sometimes it does modify their behavior...not core values.
Passion (or lust) does seem to make some people go over
the edge...who wouldn't normally. Depends on the person's
current needs.
One thing is for sure...we can't (and shouldn't try) to control
what others do, it's a recipe for disaster.
