I second the Heroes suggestion, and recommend you rent the first season. It won't make sense if you just try to turn it on.
Speaking of TV on DVD, try Veronica Mars (the first season is one of the best seasons of ANY show, cannot recommend this enough), Six Feet Under, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (comedy), Battlestar Galactica (sci-fi but extremely good), and Weeds (comedy).

If you like lost, you'll like Heroes.
It's the same kind of.. cliffhanger at the end of each episode, multiple storyline, characters being related in some way kinda theme.
Only the characters (not an island) have powers.
hard to get into though if you've missed a bit.
