Hi all,
We have a router so we can run more than 1 PC at home. It is sat on top of the TV. My son is angry because for some reason his laptop keeps getting disconnected. However all our other PC's seem ok. We set our virgin set top box as we are broad band. However my son still keeps getting this problem. He runs his laptop from his bedroom upstairs whereas all our other Pcs run downstairs.
Is there anything else we can do?

What kind of laptop is it? Does it have a built-in wireless card or is it one that he plugs in to his computer? It's possible that he's running on a card that is "802.11b" while everyone else is on "802.11g," which means that he has a slower connection that keeps getting kicked off. That happened to me, but I got a new "802.11g" wireless connection so I no longer have problems.

basically, all old wireless cards that have "802.11a" or "802.11b" will run on wireless routers that are "802.11g," but they won't be as fast or have connections that are as strong as "802.11g" wireless cards on the same "802.11g" router.

To start with see what happens when your son tries using his laptop downstairs. If that solves the problem then you might want to try getting him a wireless adapter from Maplins. It looks like a satellite dish, plugs in the USB port and improves the connectivity. I doubt he's out of range because these things are meant to cover half a mile.

Sounds silly I know but make sure that he's trying to connect to the right network.

It might not help having the router sat on the TV as there are two speakers in that are magnetic.

Alternatively check all the settings on his laptop are the same as the other computers in the house.

It sounds like its just out of range or getting interference. If possible you should try to put the router in the middle of your home away from things like microwaves fridges televisions and cordless phones that can create interference. You could also try using the router on a different channel and see if that makes any difference.

If the signal upstairs is good then it may be the wireless network card in the laptop is faulty. I have repaired a customers laptop that had that fault by replacing the internal wireless card.

Good luck.
